Topic: The Media. Is the media to blame for things such as low self-esteem among women, celebrity obsession, and ‘boom-and-doom’ reporting, or should the American people as a whole begin to look at the media as a business, who will profit off our obsession with said topics, and re-evaluate our own expectations from the media?

Analysis: On one hand, the media’s primary goal should be, regardless of making money, to report news that directly affect the American people as a whole. They should, out of obligation, be able to report a relevant story that affects us without biases in such a way that we should be informed when we tune into the news, or pick up a magazine. However, what some people forget is that businesses do not exist for the sole purpose of fulfilling an obligation to the people, but rather to fulfill their own expectations of success. As the political philosopher Adam Smith said, “It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own self-interest.” What this means is that we should understand that the media does not exist in order to make sure we are all informed. It exists as a source of profit. This may be a cynical, hard-bitten approach to look at it, but it remains true (with the exceptions of non-profits and charities, of course). Companies that exist in order to make a profit must find a way to sell a product so that it can be sold in great quantities. For example, there is a very distinct reason that publications such as Cosmopolitan and US Weekly give more stories about sex positions and celebrity trends as opposed to topics that may be considered more important. They know that they demographic that they hold is less interested in the latter. Now, these magazines reporting on such things could cause a backlash such as a heightened amount of promiscuity, and low self-esteem issues among women. It is only after this result that people begin to become incensed with the media. Now the consuming masses must ask themselves: what is it exactly that they are doing to give the impression to this industry that what they are putting out is what we want? Furthermore, seeing as this industry is certainly profitable (publications such as People magazine have the assets to pay millions for exclusive rights to the first celebrity baby pictures e.g. paying 4 million dollars to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for the first pictures of their natural-born twins), why exactly is it that we insist on buying into it? After all, would this industry be putting out such a mediocre product if they weren’t absolutely sure that it would be bought into? Should we nip the problem at the bud by changing our interests, or should we wait for the media to take the high road?

How does this relate to political philosophy? :Although this has almost nothing to do with the government, the concept of the Social Contract comes to mind. This industry only has as much power as we give it. If we buy into what they put out even though it proves irrelevant, they hold the ability to distract us from what is important and continue to sell what they are selling. If we re-evaluate our views, or our general expectations from the media, and cease to allow them to profit off of our slowly deteriorating interests.

Question to the Class: Should the media take more proactive measures independently in order to put out a more relevant, unbiased product to the people based solely on their obligation to the people, or should we as the American people re-evaluate our interest in things that prove pointless in order to essentially force this industry into changing their prodict to fit the interests of a new, informed, educated demographic?
